Metal Shingle Roofing in Anchorage & the Mat-Su Valley

Stone-coated steel in shingle, shake, and slate profiles. It looks like a shingle roof from the street, performs like metal, and usually outlasts two asphalt roofs.

Metal shingles are steel panels made to look like a shingle roof. Ours are stone-coated steel: steel with a protective metallic coating and stone granules bonded on top, in shingle, shake, and slate profiles. From the driveway it reads as a shingle roof. Up top it performs like metal, and it lasts somewhere past forty years, which usually means one metal roof outlasts two asphalt roofs. Metal roofing →

What stone-coated steel is rated for

These are the panels’ ratings and warranty numbers. They matter on the Hillside in a Chugach wind event and around Palmer when the Matanuska wind blows.

  • Wind uplift. The panels lock together and are built to resist uplift in winds up to 120 mph.
  • Wind-driven rain. Tested against wind-driven rain up to 110 mph.
  • Impact. Class 4, the top rating, tested with a 2-inch steel ball. Damaging hail is rare here, and the rating is there if it comes.
  • Fire. Class A. Untreated cedar carries no fire rating at all.
  • Lifespan. Somewhere past forty years. Asphalt up here gets fifteen to twenty-five, depending on the shingle.

How metal shingles handle Alaska snow

Differently from standing seam. The stone texture holds snow more like a shingle roof does, so it tends to let go in smaller slides instead of a whole slope at once. On a house with doors, decks, and meters under the eaves, that’s often the point.

Smaller isn’t harmless. Wet spring snow off a second story can still bury a step or tear a gutter loose, so guards still matter over doors and walkways. Stone-coated steel needs fewer than standing seam, not none. Snow guards →

Can metal shingles go over my old roof?

In many cases, yes. Stone-coated steel can go over one layer of asphalt when that layer is sound and the decking checks out from the attic. That saves the tear-off and the landfill trip. Code generally allows one roof-over, so a house that already has two layers gets torn off first. If the decking needs work, the job becomes a tear-off, and the rotten sheets are replaced, photographed, and included in the price. Roof replacement →

Metal shingles vs standing seam

Holds snow like shingles

Stone-coated steel

Textured, in shingle, shake, or slate looks. Snow comes off in smaller slides. It fits a house where you want the look of shingles or shake, or where a big slide would land on a door, a deck, or a car.

Clean lines, hidden fasteners

Standing seam

Smooth painted panels, raised seams, and hidden fasteners. Snow slides off it fastest, so it gets snow guards wherever a slide would land. Standing seam →

Both are steel, both usually outlast two asphalt roofs, and we install both. We’ll tell you which one we’d put on your house, and why.

Are metal shingles loud in the rain?

About as quiet as shingles. We install stone-coated steel over a solid deck and underlayment, and on most houses there’s an attic between the roof and your ceiling. The drumming people remember is bare metal panels on open framing over a shop or a barn. A house roof isn’t built that way.

Shingle, shake, or slate profile

Same steel, same ratings, three looks. The shingle profile reads like an architectural asphalt roof. The shake profile keeps the cedar look without the cedar, and it suits log and timber homes out toward Lazy Mountain and the Butte. Metal shake →

Colors are granule blends, matte and textured. Pick from full-size samples outside in daylight, because low winter light and snow change how a color reads. Colors and finishes →

We install stone-coated steel in Wasilla and Palmer, out through Meadow Lakes to Big Lake, and in Eagle River, Anchorage, and Girdwood.

What a metal shingle roof costs

More than architectural asphalt up front, and the number depends on your roof. Size and pitch. Hips, valleys, dormers, and pipes, which all take trim and flashing. Tear-off or re-roof over one sound layer. Decking, which is included either way. The profile you pick, snow guards, and access: steep driveways and tall walls take more time. We price it after the inspection, in writing, line by line. Metal roof cost →
